Oaktown Zouk was founded in 2026 by 6 instructors and one community member. This is our story and how we operate.
As an organization, we have 3 goals:
Train great Brazilian Zouk Dancers - we want to teach a program that teaches dancers to be nationally recognized as high-quality, competent, and comfortable.
Build a community - in a world where people are increasingly distant, we provide a place and space for people to come together and connect on and off the dance floor. We've all made deep friendships on and off the dance floor, and earnestly hope that the friends you make at Oaktown Zouk will last a lifetime.
Build people - Dance, and Brazilian Zouk in particular, is often a metaphor for learning about yourself. Zouk challenges you to be more aware about your body and your mind, and to communicate what you are experiencing to others. If you walk away from zouk and forget everything about the dance, we hope you'll still stand a little taller and know yourself a little better for having tried it.
Oaktown Zouk operates through Third Space Revival, a 501c3 non-profit organization (which is better known locally as the organization that runs The Oakland Grove).
Operating via a non-profit is the perfect match for what we want to give to the community:
Our classes and memberships are sliding scale, with no one turned away for lack of funds. Community members with high paying jobs help subsidize those working in less lucrative fields in a region that ranks as one of the most expensive places to live globally.
Donations for drop-ins or memberships above the minimum suggested amount are charitable donations - you'll get a tax receipt in December.
Any surplus, after we pay rent and pay our teachers and support staff a fair rate, will be reinvested in the community or the building as better snacks, more events, more live DJ's, etc.
